N5Japanese Grammar

Toward, to (direction)

Formation:[Destination] + へ

What is へ?

The particle へ (written as へ but pronounced え) marks the direction or destination of movement. Think of it as drawing a path. You are heading toward something rather than pinpointing an exact arrival spot.

You will see へ paired with movement verbs like ()く (to go), ()る (to come), (かえ)る (to return), and ()かう (to head toward). Whenever someone is physically moving in a direction, へ is a natural fit.

One important thing to remember: へ is always pronounced え when used as a particle. If you see 東京(とうきょう)()きます, you read it as とうきょういきます, never とうきょういきます. This catches many beginners off guard, but after a few days of practice it becomes second nature.

へ vs に — What is the Difference?

This is the question everyone asks, and honestly the two particles overlap a lot. Both can mark a destination with movement verbs, and in most everyday conversation they are interchangeable. However, there is a subtle difference in nuance:

  • emphasizes the direction — the journey, the heading, the "toward-ness."
  • emphasizes the arrival point — the specific place you end up at.

Think of it this way: if you are writing a postcard from the train and want to express the feeling of traveling toward somewhere, へ captures that sense of motion. If you are telling someone exactly where you arrived, に feels more precise.

In practice, is more common in spoken Japanese. But へ appears frequently in writing, signs, and more literary or emotional contexts. You will also find へ in set phrases like ようこそ日本(にほん)へ (Welcome to Japan) where the warm, inviting sense of "toward us" matters.

Key limitation of へ: You cannot use へ for non-movement meanings. Unlike , you cannot use へ for time, existence, indirect objects, or change of state. It is strictly for direction of physical movement.
