Grammar Notes & Usage Tips

Use を before 置く to mark the thing you're putting — for example, 本を置く means "to put a book (somewhere)."
Use に to show where you're putting something — for example, 机の上に本を置く means "to put a book on the desk."
Don’t forget both を and に in the same sentence — saying 本を机の上置く is incorrect; you need the に after the location.
