The Outcome That Never Was
ば〜のに sets up a condition that did not hold and names the better outcome that therefore did not happen.
(If I had the money, I could buy it — but I don't.)
The のに is what makes it counterfactual. Without it, ば is an ordinary open condition.
| Pattern | Reality |
|---|---|
| お金があれば買える | if I have money, I can buy it |
I don't have it, so I can't |
Regret About the Past
Put both halves in the past and it becomes regret about something already settled:
- 知っていれば行ったのに。(I'd have gone if I'd known.)
| Pattern | Focus |
|---|---|
| ばよかった | the action you wish you'd taken |
| ば〜のに | the outcome you missed because of it |
早く出れば間に合ったのに names the train you missed.
Trailing のに
The second half is often left unsaid, and the のに carries the whole complaint on its own: 手伝ってくれればよかったのに…
