Correcting Someone, Hard
どころか denies what was said and replaces it with something at the other end of the scale.
- 上手どころか、プロ級です。(Good? He's practically professional.)
The correction can go up or down, but it always overshoots the original claim.
Two Directions
| Sentence | Direction |
|---|---|
| 寒いどころか暑いくらいだ | opposite — not cold, hot |
| 一万円どころか十万円かかった | further along — not 10,000 but 100,000 |
The Negative Pattern — "Let Alone"
With a negative second clause it means "not even X, let alone Y":
- 漢字どころかひらがなも読めない。(I can't read hiragana, let alone kanji.)
Note the English order flips. Japanese names the harder thing first; English names it last.
Against ばかりか
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| どころか | contradicts — it's not X, it's more than X |
| ばかりか | adds — not only X but also Y |
ばかりか accepts the first item. どころか rejects it.
Register
Emphatic and common in speech. It carries a hint of "you've got that wrong", so it lands better with friends than with a client.
