N4Japanese Grammar

Don't have to ~, it's fine not to ~

Formation:Verb [ない-form] − い + くてもいいです

What is なくてもいい?

なくてもいい is how you say "you don't have to" in Japanese. It's the verbal equivalent of a shrug. You're free not to do the thing. "You don't have to come." "You don't need to apologize." "It's fine if you don't eat it."

If てもいい gives permission to do something, なくてもいい gives permission to not do it. And if you've seen なければならない (must do), think of なくてもいい as its opposite. You're off the hook. Our lesson on expressing ability and obligation covers both sides.

Formation

Start with the ない-form of a verb. Drop the final い, then add くてもいいです:

Verb ない-Form なくてもいい
() ()かない ()かなくてもいい
()べる ()べない ()べなくてもいい
する しない しなくてもいい
() こない こなくてもいい
() ()まない ()まなくてもいい
(いそ) (いそ)がない (いそ)がなくてもいい

Polite form: なくてもいいです. The です makes it suitable for any situation.

The logic: ない conjugates like an い-adjective. So ない → なくて (te-form of the adjective) + もいい (even if, it's okay) = "even if you don't do it, it's okay."

なくてもいい vs なければならない

These two are opposites on the obligation scale:

Pattern Meaning Feeling
なければならない Must do, have to Obligation
なくてもいい Don't have to, it's fine not to Freedom
  • 明日(あした)()なければならない
    You have to come tomorrow
  • 明日(あした)()なくてもいい
You don't have to come tomorrow

Note: "don't have to" is NOT the same as "must not." Saying なくてもいい means it's optional. If you want to say "must not," that's てはいけない, a totally different pattern.

Asking Permission Not to Do Something

Turn it into a question and you're asking "is it okay if I don't...?"

  • ()かなくてもいいですか?
Is it okay if I don't go?
  • 全部(ぜんぶ)()べなくてもいいですか?
Do I have to eat all of it?

This connects naturally to the broader world of permission and requests, where てもいい handles the positive side and なくてもいい handles the negative.
