The Written だけ
のみ means "only" and is the formal, written counterpart of だけ.
- 会員のみご利用いただけます。(Members only may use this.)
Everything のみ does, だけ also does. The difference is register, and it is a large one — のみ in casual speech sounds like you are reading a sign aloud.
| Register | Sentence |
|---|---|
| everyday | 水だけください |
| formal | 水のみでございます |
Where You Meet It
Signage, terms and conditions, official notices, academic writing. It is high-frequency in written public Japanese and rare in conversation, so recognition matters more than production.
のみならず
The compound のみならず means "not only ~ but also", and is the formal sibling of だけでなく:
- 国内のみならず海外でも評価されている。(It's recognised not only at home but abroad.)
Against ばかり and しか
| Pattern | Sense |
