Left That Way, and It Shouldn't Be
っぱなし has two senses, and both carry criticism.
1. Left in a state. Something was done and not undone.
- 電気をつけっぱなしにした。(I left the light on.)
2. Continuously, without a break.
- 朝から立ちっぱなしだ。(I've been standing since morning.)
Sense 1 blames neglect; sense 2 complains about strain. Neither is neutral.
Against ~たまま
The near-synonym, and the difference is the reproach:
| Pattern | Feel |
|---|---|
| 窓を開けたまま | left open — neutral description |
| 窓を開けっぱなし | left open — and that's careless |
まま simply reports the state. っぱなし says someone should have dealt with it.
Form
It attaches to the ます stem and behaves as a noun, so it takes だ, の or にする:
- 置きっぱなしの荷物(luggage left lying around)
Register
Casual to neutral, and common in complaints at home and at work.
