Less Than You Feared
て済む says a situation was resolved with less trouble, cost or effort than expected.
- 電話で済みました。(A phone call was all it took.)
There is relief built in. The implied comparison is always with something worse that did not happen.
ないで済む — Avoiding It Altogether
The negative form is the more useful one:
- 手術しないで済みました。(I got away without needing surgery.)
なくて済む is equally common and means the same.
Against だけでいい
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| て済む | it turned out to need only this — relief |
| だけでいい | this much is sufficient — a plain statement |
千円で済んだ implies you braced for more. 千円だけでいい is just a price.
済む as an Ordinary Verb
済む alone means "to finish" or "to be settled": 仕事が済んだ. The set phrase 済みません comes from the same root — literally "this isn't finished", meaning the debt to you is not yet settled.
