Correcting the Description
というより rejects one label and offers a better one.
- 寒いというより痛い。(It's not so much cold as painful.)
Both halves describe the same thing. This is not a comparison of two items — it is a search for the right word.
Against より
| Pattern | Compares |
|---|---|
| 兄より背が高い | two different people |
| 趣味というより仕事だ | two descriptions of one thing |
Plain より ranks; というより relabels.
Usually With むしろ
むしろ ("rather") often reinforces the second half:
- 怒っているというより、むしろ悲しいのだと思う。(Not angry so much as sad, I think.)
No だ Before It
Nouns and な-adjectives attach directly, without だ: 趣味というより, never ×趣味だというより.
Its Social Use
It softens a correction. Rather than telling someone their word is wrong, というより proposes a replacement while accepting their description was close — useful when disagreeing with a superior.
