Flat Rejection
わけがない says the thing is not merely unlikely but impossible. There is no reasoning under which it could be true.
- そんな安い値段で買えるわけがない。(There's no way you can buy it that cheap.)
Spoken, it often shortens to わけない.
Where It Sits on the Confidence Scale
| Pattern | Strength |
|---|---|
| かもしれない | might |
| はずがない | shouldn't be — I have a reason to doubt it |
| わけがない | there's no way — it's impossible |
はずがない rests on evidence you happen to have. わけがない rests on the nature of the thing. If someone tells you the meeting is at 3am, はずがない questions the schedule; わけがない says the idea is absurd.
Attaching It
| Type | Form |
|---|---|
| Verb | 勝てるわけがない |
| い-adjective | 正しいわけがない |
| な-adjective | 簡単なわけがない |
| Noun | 本物のわけがない |
Nouns here take の, unlike わけだ, which takes という. Both are heard, but の is the safer default with わけがない.
Not the Same as わけではない
This is the pair worth drilling:
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 知らない**わけではない** | it's not that I don't know |
| 知っているわけがない | there's no way I'd know |
One is a hedge, the other a denial. They differ by two characters and by everything else.
Tone
わけがない is blunt. In business or with a superior, ではないでしょうか or かねます carries the same doubt without the edge. Save わけがない for friends, or for things that genuinely are absurd.
