N3Japanese Grammar

There's no way to; it can't be done; nothing can be done

No Method Exists

ようがない says the action is impossible because there is no means of doing it — not because you lack the skill.

(I have no contact details, so there's no way to reach them.)

Against the Potential Form

Pattern Why not
I can't swim — I lack the ability
泳(およ)ぎようがない there's nowhere to swim — no means exists

Use the potential form for ability. ようがない is about circumstances leaving no route.

The Resignation Sense

It often carries a shrug — nothing can be done about it:

  • 仕方(しかた)がない at the same register, and 直(なお)しようがない for something beyond repair.

Form

ようもない is an equally common variant with slightly more emphasis.

Against がたい

がたい means barely possible, usually for psychological reasons. ようがない means no method exists at all. がたい is reluctance; ようがない is impossibility.
