Grammar Notes & Usage Tips

Use を after the place when treating it like a direct object, as in プールを泳ぐ (to swim in the pool), but it's more natural to say プールで泳ぐ using で to show the location.
When talking about who is swimming, use the subject particle が — e.g., 子どもが泳ぐ (The child swims).
Don’t forget that 泳ぐ turns into 泳ぎます in polite form — many beginners mistakenly say 泳ぎます as "oyogimasu" but forget the "g" sound comes from changing "gu" to "gi" before "masu."
