N3Japanese Grammar

Into; mutually; again — verb-stem suffixes

Formation:ますstem + 込む / 合う / 直す

Three Suffixes, One Rule

All three attach to the ます stem and turn one verb into another. Learning them together is efficient because the attachment rule is identical.

Suffix Adds Example
込(こ)む into, inward, thoroughly 飛(と)び込(こ)む (jump in)
合(あ)う mutually, with each other 話(はな)し合(あ)う (discuss)
直(なお)す again, properly やり… see below

込む — Inward or Thorough

The core is movement into something: 乗(の)り込(こ)む (board), 詰(つ)め込(こ)む (cram in), 申(もう)し込(こ)む (apply).

It also means doing something deeply or persistently: 考(かんが)え込(こ)む (brood), 黙(だま)り込(こ)む (fall silent).

合う — Reciprocal

Both parties do it to each other: 助(たす)け合(あ)う (help one another), 知(し)り合(あ)う (get to know each other), 愛(あい)し合(あ)う (love each other).

Because it is reciprocal, the subject is usually plural, and the partner takes と.

直す — Do It Over

Redo the action, usually because the first attempt was unsatisfactory: 書(か)き直(なお)す (rewrite), やり直(なお)す (start over), 見(み)直(なお)す (review, or reassess someone favourably).

Do not confuse it with the independent verb 直(なお)す, which means to fix or repair.
