N3Japanese Grammar

Half-done; partway; on the verge of

Formation:ますstem + かける / かけた / かけの

Started, Not Finished

かける on a verb stem means the action began but did not complete.

  • 読(よ)みかけの本(ほん)(a book I've started and not finished)

Three Forms

Form Use
言(い)いかける start to say
言(い)いかけた started to say (and stopped)
読(よ)みかけの本(ほん) before a noun

The "On the Verge" Sense

With verbs that have no gradual middle, かける means the thing nearly happened:

  • 死(し)にかけた。(I nearly died.)
  • 忘(わす)れかけていた。(I'd almost forgotten.)

Against そうになる and きれない

Pattern Sense
かける began and stopped partway
そうになる almost happened, but didn't start
きれない couldn't get through all of it

転(ころ)びそうになった means you nearly fell and didn't. 食(た)べかけ means you started eating and stopped.

Not the Independent Verb かける

掛(か)ける on its own means to hang, to sit down, to call, to pour — an entirely separate high-frequency verb. Only the bound form after a ます stem is this pattern.
