Singling One Thing Out
こそ picks one element and pushes everything else aside: this one, not the others.
(This time I really will pass.)
It replaces は and が rather than stacking with them.
The most common こそ you will ever hear:
- 「ありがとうございました。」「こちらこそ。」("Thank you." "No, thank you.")
It returns the sentiment and insists the other person deserves it more. Worth memorising as a unit.
The Emphatic Reason
からこそ marks a reason as the reason, often one the listener would not guess:
- 厳しく言うのは、期待しているからこそだ。(I'm strict with you precisely because I expect a lot of you.)
| Pattern | Force |
|---|---|
| 好き**だから** | because I like it |
| 好きだからこそ | precisely because I like it |
からこそ usually introduces a reason that sounds counterintuitive, so it pairs naturally with a surprising statement.
Only After
て-form + こそ means the result is only real once the first thing happens:
- 努力してこそ意味がある。(It only means something if you make the effort.)
Register
こそ is emphatic rather than formal, and it appears comfortably in speech, writing and set greetings alike. What it never is, is neutral — reach for it when you want the emphasis heard.
