N5Sentence (plain/polite) + から
N5Japanese Grammar

Because ~, so ~ (giving a reason)

Formation:Sentence (plain/polite) + から

Because with から

から after a clause means "because." You can put the reason first or the result first. Our lesson on conjunctions covers から alongside other connecting patterns, and there's more on から as a particle in our particles guide.

Two Patterns

Reason first, then result

The reason clause ends with から, followed by the result:

明日(あした)(あめ)から()かけない。
Because it'll rain tomorrow, I'm not going out.

Result first, then reason

State the result, then explain why:

()かけない。明日(あした)(あめ)から
I'm not going out. Because it'll rain tomorrow.

Plain or Polite

から can follow either plain form or polite form. No special conjugation needed:

  • (いそが)しいから (plain)
  • (いそが)しいですから (polite)

Both are correct. Plain form sounds more casual.

から vs ので

Both mean "because," but から is more subjective and casual. ので sounds softer and more polite. In everyday conversation, から is used more often.

Example Sentences

今日(きょう)はとても(いそが)しいから一緒(いっしょ)()けないの。
I can't go with you today because I'm very busy.

(さむ)いから(まど)()めてください。
It's cold, so please close the window.

時間(じかん)がないから(いそ)ごう。
There's no time, so let's hurry.

どうして?()きだから。
Why? Because I like it.
