N3Japanese Grammar

Aimed at; intended for; suited to; facing

Formation:Noun + 向け | Noun + 向き

Deliberate vs Naturally Suited

The two look alike and mean different things, and this is the whole page.

Pattern Meaning
向(む)け made for that audience on purpose
向(む)き happens to suit that audience
  • 子供(こども)向(む)けの番組(ばんぐみ)(a programme made for children)
  • 子供(こども)向(む)きの番組(ばんぐみ)(a programme that suits children)

向(む)け states the maker's intention. 向(む)き states a judgement about fit — the thing may have been made for anyone.

向き Also Means "Facing"

Its literal sense is direction, and this use is very common:

  • 南(みなみ)向(む)きの部屋(へや)(a south-facing room)

In property listings, 南(みなみ)向(む)き is a selling point, since it means sunlight.

向いている — The Verb

向(む)いている is the verb behind 向(む)き and means "to be suited to a person":

  • この仕事(しごと)は私(わたし)に向(む)いています。(This job suits me.)

Note the particle: に, not を.

Register

向(む)け is common in business and product description — 初心者(しょしんしゃ)向(む)け, 海外(かいがい)向(む)け, 法人(ほうじん)向(む)け. 向(む)き is more conversational.
