The Other ながら
You already know ながら for two simultaneous actions. Add も and the meaning changes completely: it becomes contrast.
- 狭いながらも快適な部屋です。(It's small, but comfortable.)
Same word, different job. The も is what flips it.
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 歩き**ながら**話す | talk while walking |
| 知っていながらも黙る | stay silent although he knows |
Attaching It
| Type | Form |
|---|---|
| Verb | 知りながらも |
| い-adjective | 狭いながらも |
| な-adjective | 残念でありながらも, or the bare stem: シンプルながらも |
| Noun | 子供でありながらも |
な-adjectives take であり in formal writing, but attaching ながらも straight to the
bare stem is equally correct and commoner in modern usage.
Verbs use the ます stem, not the dictionary form: 知りながらも, never 知るながらも.
Register
ながらも is literary. In speech people say けど or のに; ながらも belongs to essays, formal speech and set expressions like 残念ながら (regrettably) and 我ながら (even if I say so myself).
The も is sometimes dropped in these fixed phrases without changing the contrastive meaning.
