A Reluctant Yes
Two negatives cancel to a grudging affirmative. The speaker is conceding a point they would rather not.
- 食べられないことはない。(It's not that I can't eat it — I can, just.)
The whole value of the pattern is the reluctance. A plain 食べられます says yes; ないことはない says yes with reservations you are inviting the listener to notice.
Against わけではない
| Pattern | Job |
|---|---|
| わけではない | corrects an assumption the listener made |
| ないことはない | concedes a possibility the speaker is unenthusiastic about |
What Usually Follows
A が or けど clause almost always comes next, carrying the reservation:
- できないことはないですが、時間がかかります。(It's not impossible, but it will take time.)
If nothing follows, the reservation is implied and the listener is expected to hear it.
Adjectives Too
い-adjectives take くない: 難しくないことはない (it isn't exactly easy).
Register
Neutral and very common in business, where it lets you avoid both a flat no and an over-committed yes.
