Reassurance, Not Prohibition
ことはない tells someone they need not do something. It removes an obligation rather than forbidding an action.
- 心配することはない。(There's no need to worry.)
It is one of the warmest patterns at this level — used to talk someone out of guilt, worry or unnecessary effort.
Against なくてもいい and てはいけない
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| なくてもいい | you don't have to — neutral permission |
| ことはない | there's no need — reassuring, often emphatic |
| てはいけない | you must not — a prohibition |
The third is the one to keep well apart. 謝ることはない means "you needn't apologise". 謝ってはいけない means "you must not apologise" — nearly the opposite intent.
The Second Sense — Never Happens
With ことがない (が, not は) it means something has never occurred, which connects to たことがある:
- 遅れたことがない。(I've never been late.)
The particle carries the distinction: は for "no need", が for "never".
Form
Dictionary form only. There is no past ことはなかった for the "no need" sense.
