N3Japanese Grammar

Must be; I'm sure that; there's no doubt

Formation:Plain form + に違いない | な-adj / Noun + (である) + に違いない

Near-Certainty, From Evidence

に違(ちが)いない is the strongest guess Japanese offers short of a plain statement. The speaker has evidence and has drawn a conclusion.

  • 電気(でんき)がついている。家(いえ)にいるに違(ちが)いない。(The lights are on. He must be home.)

The Confidence Ladder

Worth learning as a set rather than one at a time:

Pattern Strength
かもしれない might
でしょう probably
はず should be — I have a reason
に違(ちが)いない must be — I'm certain

はず and に違(ちが)いない are close. はず rests on a known rule or arrangement; に違(ちが)いない rests on the speaker's own inference from what they can see.

It Is About the Speaker, Not the World

に違(ちが)いない always reports your conviction. It cannot be used for objective fact:

  • ○ 疲(つか)れているに違(ちが)いない(I'm sure he's tired)
  • × 水(みず)は百度(ひゃくど)で沸騰(ふっとう)するに違(ちが)いない

For something simply true, state it.

Register

Written and formal speech. In conversation, きっと〜と思(おも)う or 〜はずだ is more natural. に違(ちが)いありません is the polite form.
