One Sufficient Condition
さえ〜ば says a single thing is enough — nothing else is needed.
- お金さえあれば買える。(I could buy it, if only I had the money.)
This is different from plain ば, which states a condition without claiming it is the only one.
| Pattern | Claim |
|---|---|
| お金があれば買える | if I have money, I can buy it |
| お金さえあれば買える | money is all that's missing |
Three Shapes
| Base | Form |
|---|---|
| Noun | お金さえあれば |
| Verb | 練習しさえすれば |
| て form | 座ってさえいれば |
The verb form is the one learners miss: ますstem + さえすれば, not ×練習するさえすれば.
The Regret Use
With a past counterfactual it becomes regret, close to ばよかった:
- 確認さえしていれば防げた。(If only I'd checked, it could have been prevented.)
