Two Things Rising Together
ば〜ほど links two things that increase in step.
- 練習すればするほど上手になる。(The more you practise, the better you get.)
The Verb Appears Twice
That is the shape learners find odd: the same verb, first in the ば form, then in the dictionary form before ほど.
| Type | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | Vば + V + ほど | 読めば読むほど |
| い-adjective | Aければ + A + ほど | 安ければ安いほど |
| な-adjective | Naなら + Na + なほど | 便利なら便利なほど |
The Short Version
In practice the first half is often dropped, leaving just ほど:
- 読むほど面白くなる。(The more you read, the more interesting it gets.)
Both are correct. The full ば〜ほど is more emphatic.
With a Negative Result
The second half can fall as the first rises:
- 考えれば考えるほど分からなくなる。(The more I think about it, the less I understand.)
