The Realisation That Needed Experience
てはじめて says something only became true — usually only became understood — after the first action happened.
- 失ってはじめて大切さが分かる。(You only understand its value once you've lost it.)
The second clause is almost always a verb of realising, understanding or noticing: 分かる, 気づく, 知る.
Against てから
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| てから | after — plain sequence |
| てはじめて | not until — the first act was necessary |
日本に来てから友達ができた is a sequence. 日本に来てはじめて分かった says coming was the precondition.
初めて as an Adverb
Do not confuse it with plain 初めて meaning "for the first time":
| 初めて日本に行った | I went to Japan for the first time |
| 日本に行ってはじめて分かった | only after going did I understand |
The bound form after て is the grammar pattern; the free adverb is not.
Register
Neutral, and common in reflective writing, essays and speeches.
