Turning Adjectives into Adverbs
English has "quick" → "quickly." Japanese does the same thing, but the rules are simpler. For more on adverbs, see our guide to Japanese adverbs.
い-Adjectives → く
Drop い, add く:
| Adjective | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 早い | 早く | early, quickly |
| 遅い | 遅く | late, slowly |
| 暖かい | 暖かく | warmly |
| 安い | 安く | cheaply |
な-Adjectives → に
Replace な with に:
| Adjective | Adverb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| きれい | きれいに | beautifully, cleanly |
| 元気 | 元気に | energetically |
| 静か | 静かに | quietly |
| 上手 | 上手に | skillfully |
