Something Happens Inside a Span
間に marks a window of time and says something happened at some point inside it.
- 寝ている間に地震があった。(There was an earthquake while I was asleep.)
The sleeping is the window; the earthquake is a single event inside it.
間 vs 間に — The に Matters
Dropping に changes the meaning completely:
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 間に | at some point during — a one-off event |
| 間 | throughout the whole time — a continuous action |
- 母が寝ている間に出かけた。(I went out at some point while she slept.)
- 母が寝ている間、本を読んでいた。(I read the whole time she slept.)
If the second action fills the span, drop に. If it happens once inside it, keep に.
Attaching It
| Type | Form |
|---|---|
| Verb | 寝ている間に |
| い-adjective | 若い間に |
| な-adjective | 元気な間に |
| Noun | 夏休みの間に |
Verbs are usually in the ている form, because you need an ongoing state to have a window at all.
間に vs ながら
Both translate as "while," but the subjects differ:
- ながら — one person doing two things: 歩きながら話す
- 間に — two different subjects: 母が料理している間に宿題をした
That is the practical test for choosing between them.
