N4Japanese Grammar

Start doing / finish doing / keep doing

Formation:Verb [ます stem] + 始める/終わる/続ける

Compound Verbs for Stages of an Action

Attach these to a ます stem and you mark where in an action you are:

Suffix Meaning Example
始(はじ)める start doing 読(よ)み始(はじ)める
終(お)わる finish doing 読(よ)み終(お)わる
続(つづ)ける keep doing 読(よ)み続(つづ)ける
出(だ)す suddenly start 泣(な)き出(だ)す

They Conjugate Normally

The compound is just another verb:

  • 読(よ)み始(はじ)めました (started reading)
  • 食(た)べ終(お)わったら (once I finish eating)
  • 働(はたら)き続(つづ)けています (keeping on working)

始(はじ)める and 続(つづ)ける are る-verbs; 終(お)わる is a う-verb.

始める vs 出す

Both mean "start," and the difference is control:

Pattern Sense
降(ふ)り**始(はじ)める** began to rain — neutral
降(ふ)り**出(だ)す** suddenly started raining — abrupt, unexpected

出(だ)す implies you did not see it coming, so it does not suit deliberate actions: ×勉強(べんきょう)し出(だ)す is odd.

終わる vs やめる

  • 読(よ)み**終(お)わる** — finished reading (got to the end)
  • 読(よ)むのをやめる — stopped reading (gave up partway)

終(お)わる means completion; やめる means abandonment.
