A Trend Running Away
一方だ says a change is continuing in one direction with no sign of turning.
- 物価は上がる**一方だ**。(Prices just keep rising.)
The verb must describe change: 増える, 減る, 悪くなる, 進む. A static verb does not work: ×ある一方だ.
The Negative Lean
Most examples describe something getting worse. It is not an absolute rule, but 一方だ carries concern more often than not, and pairing it with a welcome change can sound odd.
Not 一方で
Same word, different pattern, and this is the trap:
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 一方だ | one thing running away in a single direction |
| 一方で | two things held in balance |
増える一方だ means it keeps increasing. 増える一方で… introduces a second, contrasting fact.
Against ばかりだ
Both mark a one-way trend:
| Pattern | Register |
|---|---|
| 一方だ | neutral, formal, common in reports |
| ばかりだ | carries frustration |
Form
It attaches to the dictionary form only. There is no past 一方だった for the ongoing sense, and it takes no な-adjectives or nouns.
