No Special Ending — Just 一番
English changes the word: big → biggest. Japanese leaves the adjective alone and puts 一番 in front of it.
- 高い (expensive) → 一番高い (the most expensive)
一番 literally means "number one."
The Full Pattern
[group] の中で + Noun が + 一番 + adjective
- クラスの中で田中さんが一番背が高いです。(Tanaka is the tallest in the class.)
The thing that wins takes が, not は — you are picking it out from the group.
Naming the Group
| Group type | Marker | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A set of things | の中で | 果物の中で |
| A place | で | 日本で |
| A time span | で | 一年で |
- 日本で一番高い山は富士山です。
Asking "Which is the most?"
The question word depends on what you are choosing between:
- 何が一番好きですか。(What do you like most?)
- どれが一番安いですか。(Which one is cheapest?)
- 誰が一番早いですか。(Who is fastest?)
For a choice between exactly two, Japanese does not use 一番 — it uses どちら and ほうが: コーヒーと紅茶とどちらが好きですか。
一番 with Nouns
Add の to modify a noun directly:
- 一番の楽しみ (my greatest pleasure)
- 一番の友達 (my best friend)
