N4Japanese Grammar

Because ~ (softer, more polite than から)

Formation:Verb/い-adj (plain) + ので | な-adj/Noun + なので

Because with ので

ので also means "because," just like から. It sounds softer and more polite, so it's the one you'll hear more in formal situations and when talking to strangers. Our lesson on conjunctions covers both ので and から with more context.

How to Connect

Verbs and い-Adjectives

Use the plain form + ので:

  • (あめ)()ので (because it will rain)
  • (さむ)ので (because it's cold)

な-Adjectives and Nouns

Add な before ので:

  • (しず)なので (because it's quiet)
  • 誕生日(たんじょうび)なので (because it's my birthday)

With Polite Form

ので can also follow the polite form (ますので, ですので) for extra formality. This is common in announcements and business settings.

ので vs から

ので から
Tone Soft, objective Direct, subjective
Formality More polite More casual
Best for Explanations, apologies, requests Casual conversation, strong opinions
