Rejecting a Faulty Inference
からといって names a reason someone might use, then denies that it justifies the conclusion.
- 安いからといって品質が悪いとは限らない。(Just because it's cheap doesn't mean the quality is bad.)
The Second Half Must Be Negative
This is the rule learners break. からといって needs a denial after it:
| Ending | Example |
|---|---|
| とは限らない | doesn't necessarily |
| わけではない | it's not that |
| 訳にはいかない | can't just |
| ないほうがいい | had better not |
A positive conclusion turns it back into plain から: 安いから買った is simply "I bought it because it was cheap."
Against ので and から
| Pattern | Function |
|---|---|
| から / ので | gives a reason and accepts it |
| からといって | quotes a reason in order to reject it |
The という inside it is the give-away: you are quoting someone's logic, not endorsing it.
Shortened Form
In speech it often contracts to からって:
- 子供だからって許されない。(Being a child doesn't make it okay.)
