Substitution or Trade
代わりに does two related jobs.
1. Instead of — one thing replaces another.
- バスの**代わりに**電車で行きました。(I went by train instead of by bus.)
2. In exchange for — a trade, each side giving something.
- 手伝う**代わりに**夕食をおごって。(I'll help, in exchange for dinner.)
The second sense is what にかわって cannot do.
Against にかわって
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| にかわって | formally standing in, or historically replacing |
| かわりに | instead of, or in exchange for |
社長にかわって is deputising at a ceremony. 社長のかわりに is simply going in their place. Only かわりに can express a trade.
The Compensating Sense
It also introduces an upside that offsets a downside, close to が:
- 家賃が高い**代わりに**駅に近い。(The rent is high, but on the other hand it's near the station.)
Register
Neutral. Everyday speech and writing alike, unlike にかわって which is formal.
