Substitution — Two Flavours
にかわって covers both standing in for someone and one thing replacing another.
1. On behalf of a person.
(I'll give the greeting on the president's behalf.)
2. One thing replacing another, usually across time.
(Email replaced letters as the norm.)
Close, and the split is worth learning:
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| にかわって | formally standing in, or historically replacing |
| かわりに | instead of, or in exchange for |
(I'll help if you buy me lunch). にかわって never means an exchange.
にかわり is the same pattern in a stiffer register, common in announcements and written notices.
Register
Formal. In everyday speech, かわりに or 代わりの人 does the job.
