も Makes a Number Feel Big
Attach も to a quantity and it says the amount is more than expected.
(I waited three whole hours.)
Without も it is a plain fact: 三時間待ちました. With it, you are registering that this was a lot.
The Opposite:
The same number can be framed as too small:
| Sentence | Feeling |
|---|---|
Three hours! Far too long. |
Neutral. |
Only three hours — not long enough. |
One number, three attitudes. Choosing between them is how you show what you think without saying it.
With a Negative: "Not Even"
も plus a negative means not even that much:
- 一円も持っていない。(I haven't got a single yen.)
(I've never been, not once.)
一度も + negative is the standard way to say "never" — see indefinites.
Quite a Few
With a question word, も means "several":
- 何回も電話しました。(I called several times.)
(Quite a few people came.)
