Two Items, One Direction
も〜ば〜も lists two things that point the same way, building an impression rather than just listing.
- 彼は頭もよければ性格もいい。(He's both clever and good-natured.)
Like 上に, both halves must lean the same way — two positives or two negatives, never a mix.
The Shape
The first item takes も, the predicate goes into the ば form, then the second item takes も again:
| Type | Example |
|---|---|
| い-adjective | 安ければ |
| な-adjective | 静かなら |
| Verb | 歌えば |
| Noun | 学生なら |
Against し
| Pattern | Register |
|---|---|
| し | casual, loose listing |
| も〜ば〜も | literary, deliberately balanced |
し can add a third and a fourth item. も〜ば〜も is a two-part construction and sounds composed, which is why it appears in descriptions and speeches.
The "Some Do, Some Don't" Use
With contrasting subjects it means "there are those who ~ and those who ~":
- 賛成する人もいれば反対する人もいる。(Some agree and others object.)
This is the form you will meet most often in reading.
