Stacking Two Things the Same Way
上に adds a second item to a first. The crucial rule: both must lean the same direction.
- この店は安い**上に**おいしい。(This place is cheap, and tasty on top of that.)
Two good things, or two bad things. Never one of each.
| ○ 安い**上に**おいしい | both positive |
| ○ 高い**上に**まずい | both negative |
| × 安い**上に**まずい | mixed — use が |
Against し and その上
| Pattern | Register |
|---|---|
| し | casual, loose listing |
| 上に | tighter, slightly formal, emphasises accumulation |
| その上 | stands alone as a connective between sentences |
し can list two unrelated points. 上に insists they pile up in one direction.
