N3Japanese Grammar

To get used to; to become accustomed to

Formation:Noun + に慣れる | Dictionary form + の + に慣れる

The Particle Is に, Not を

慣(な)れる is intransitive, so what you get used to takes に:

  • 新(あたら)しい仕事(しごと)に慣(な)れました。(I've got used to the new job.)

×仕事(しごと)を慣(な)れる is the standard error, and it comes from translating "get used to" as though it took an object.

Verbs Need の

To get used to doing something, nominalise the verb first:

  • 早起(はやお)きするのに慣(な)れた。(I've got used to getting up early.)

慣れている vs 慣れた

Form Meaning
慣(な)れた the moment of becoming used to it
慣(な)れている the ongoing state of being used to it

Describing yourself now, 慣(な)れています is usually what you want. This mirrors every other change-of-state verb — see ている.

慣らす — The Transitive Partner

慣(な)らす means to accustom something else: 体(からだ)を慣(な)らす (acclimatise your body). The pair follows the ordinary intransitive/transitive split.
