The Formal で
において is the written-register replacement for the particle で marking place, time or field.
- 会議は本社において行われます。(The meeting will be held at head office.)
Everything it does, で also does. The difference is entirely register.
| Register | Sentence |
|---|---|
| everyday | 教室で試験があります |
| formal | 教室において試験を実施します |
Three Things It Marks
| Type | Example |
|---|---|
| Place | 東京において開催 |
| Time or era | 現代において |
| Field or respect | この分野において |
The third is the one worth noting: "in the field of", "in that respect".
における Before a Noun
- 日本における教育制度(the education system in Japan)
Not for Ordinary Actions
において is for events, ceremonies and abstract domains. Using it for a mundane action sounds absurd — ×レストランにおいてラーメンを食べた. Keep で for eating lunch.
