Falling Outside the Expected Standard
にしては names a standard and then reports that reality does not match it.
- 初めてにしては上手ですね。(That's good, for a first attempt.)
The mismatch can go either way — better than expected or worse.
Against 割に
These two are close, and the difference is how specific the standard is:
| Pattern | Standard |
|---|---|
| にしては | a definite, known benchmark — 初めて, 子供, 初心者 |
| 割に | a general proportion — 値段, 年 |
にしては needs something concrete to measure against. You cannot say ×たくさん勉強したにしては — the standard is too vague.
No Guessing Allowed
The first clause must be a known fact, not a supposition. If you are guessing, use としては or a conditional instead.
にしても vs にしては
One character apart, different jobs:
| Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|
| にしても | even if — grants and objects |
| にしては | for a ~ — measures against a benchmark |
