N3Japanese Grammar

About; concerning; regarding

Formation:Noun + について | Noun + についての + Noun

Naming the Topic

について marks what something is about — the subject of a talk, a book, a question, a discussion.

  • 日本(にほん)の文化(ぶんか)について研究(けんきゅう)しています。(I'm researching Japanese culture.)

It pairs with verbs of speaking, writing, thinking and investigating: 話(はな)す, 書(か)く, 考(かんが)える, 調(しら)べる, 説明(せつめい)する.

についての Before a Noun

The の is required when a noun follows:

  • 環境(かんきょう)についての報告(ほうこく)(a report about the environment)

Dropping it — ×環境(かんきょう)について報告(ほうこく) — is the standard mistake.

に関して — The Formal Sibling

に関(かん)して means the same thing at a higher register, and shows up in documents and announcements:

Pattern Register
について everyday, all-purpose
に関(かん)して formal, written

Its noun-modifying form is に関(かん)する, not に関(かん)しての: 安全(あんぜん)に関(かん)する規則(きそく).

Not にとって

について names a topic. にとって names a viewpoint. 「私(わたし)について大切(たいせつ)だ」 says something is important on the subject of me, which is not what you meant.
