N3Japanese Grammar

Centred on; mainly; with ~ at the centre

Formation:Noun + を中心に | Noun + を中心として | Noun + を中心とした + Noun

Naming the Focal Point

を中心(ちゅうしん)に marks what something revolves around — a topic, a region, a person, an age group.

  • 若者(わかもの)を中心(ちゅうしん)に人気(にんき)が広(ひろ)がっている。(It's growing popular, mainly among young people.)

It does not mean "only". The centre is where the thing is concentrated, and the edges still exist.

Three Forms

Form Use
を中心(ちゅうしん)に before a verb
を中心(ちゅうしん)として before a verb, slightly more formal
を中心(ちゅうしん)とした before a noun

The last is the one people forget: 東京(とうきょう)を中心(ちゅうしん)とした地域(ちいき).

Against だけ and 主に

Pattern Sense
だけ only — nothing outside
主(おも)に mainly — a plain adverb
を中心(ちゅうしん)に concentrated around a centre, spreading outward

を中心(ちゅうしん)に carries the image of a centre with a periphery, which 主(おも)に does not.

Register

Formal and written — reports, news, descriptions of trends and regions.
