N3Japanese Grammar

Starting with; including; ~ and others

Formation:Noun + をはじめ | Noun + をはじめとする + Noun

The Headline Example

をはじめ names the most prominent member of a group and implies the rest follow.

  • 東京(とうきょう)をはじめ各地(かくち)で開催(かいさい)されます。(It will be held in Tokyo and various other places.)

The named item must be the most representative one, not a random pick. That is what separates it from a plain list.

Against を中心に

Pattern Image
を中心(ちゅうしん)に a centre with a periphery
をはじめ a leading example, with others after it

を中心(ちゅうしん)に says where the weight sits. をはじめ says where the list starts.

をはじめとする Before a Noun

  • 医師(いし)をはじめとする専門家(せんもんか)(specialists including doctors)

をはじめとした also occurs and means the same.

Register

Formal — speeches, announcements, written introductions. It is common in the opening line of a greeting, where the most senior person present is named and everyone else acknowledged with をはじめ.
