Following Something Exactly
とおりに says an action matched a model — an instruction, an expectation, a demonstration.
- 説明書のとおりに組み立てました。(I assembled it exactly as the manual said.)
とおり vs どおり — A Reading Change
The reading voices after a noun, and both spellings appear:
| Attaches to | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Verb | とおりに | 言ったとおりに |
| Noun + の | とおりに | 説明書のとおりに |
| Noun directly | どおりに | 予定どおりに |
予定どおり, 時間どおり and 予想どおり are near-fixed expressions worth learning whole.
Tense Matters
| Form | Timing |
|---|---|
| 言うとおりにする | do as I say (instruction still coming) |
| 言ったとおりにする | do as I said (already given) |
Against ように
| Pattern | Sense |
|---|---|
| とおりに | exactly the same — no deviation |
| ように | in a similar way, or so that |
ように allows approximation; とおりに does not.
