N4Japanese Grammar

So that ~, in such a way that ~

Formation:Verb [dictionary / ない / potential] + ように

Aiming at a Result You Don't Control

ように sets up a goal state — something you hope will come about, rather than an action you will perform.

  • 忘(わす)れないようにメモします。(I take notes so that I won't forget.)
  • 聞(き)こえるように大(おお)きい声(こえ)で話(はな)します。(I speak loudly so I can be heard.)

The Verbs It Takes

ように wants a verb you cannot simply decide to do:

Verb type Example
Negative 忘(わす)れないように
Potential 話(はな)せるように
Spontaneous / intransitive 分(わ)かるように

For a verb you do control, use ために instead.

The Test

Ask whether you can decide to do it:

  • 覚(おぼ)える (memorise) — yes, a choice → 覚(おぼ)えるために
  • 忘(わす)れない (not forget) — no, an outcome → 忘(わす)れないように

Different Subjects Are Fine

Unlike ために, the two clauses can have different people:

  • 子(こ)どもが分(わ)かるように、ゆっくり話(はな)しました。(I spoke slowly so the children would understand.)

Requests and Wishes

  • ようにしてください — please make sure to: 遅(おく)れないようにしてください。
  • ように言(い)う — tell someone to: 早(はや)く来(く)るように言(い)ってください。
  • ように祈(いの)る — pray that: 合格(ごうかく)できるように祈(いの)っています。

The last one appears on every ema plaque at a shrine.
