N3Japanese Grammar

Not necessarily; not always; it isn't always the case

Formation:Plain form + とは限らない | Noun + とは限らない

Puncturing a Generalisation

とは限(かぎ)らない denies that something is always true. It leaves room for the usual case while refusing the absolute one.

  • 高(たか)いものがいいとは限(かぎ)らない。(Expensive things aren't necessarily good.)

It never denies the statement outright — only its universality.

The Partner of からといって

The two arrive together constantly:

  • 安(やす)いからといって品質(ひんしつ)が悪(わる)いとは限(かぎ)らない。(Cheap doesn't necessarily mean poor quality.)

からといって quotes the faulty inference; とは限(かぎ)らない rejects it. Learning them as a pair is more efficient than separately.

Against わけではない

Pattern Denies
わけではない an interpretation of a specific situation
とは限(かぎ)らない a general rule holding in all cases

わけではない answers "so you hate it?". とは限(かぎ)らない answers "expensive means good, right?".

Often With 必ずしも

必(かなら)ずしも strengthens the hedge and pairs almost exclusively with this pattern:

  • 必(かなら)ずしも正(ただ)しいとは限(かぎ)らない。(It isn't necessarily correct.)
