Adjective Plain Negative | ～くない / ～じゃない

Plain Negative Adjectives

The casual way to say "not ~." You'll use this in everyday conversation and inside other grammar patterns. The adjective conjugation guide has all plain and polite forms in one chart.

い-Adjectives

Drop い, add くない:

Plain	Plain Negative
高(たか)い	高(たか)くない
面白(おもしろ)い	面白(おもしろ)くない
おいしい	おいしくない
寒(さむ)い	寒(さむ)くない

いい becomes よくない.

な-Adjectives

Add じゃない after the adjective stem:

Plain	Plain Negative
好(す)きだ	好(す)きじゃない
静(しず)かだ	静(しず)かじゃない
元気(げんき)だ	元気(げんき)じゃない

Example Sentences

今日(きょう)は寒(さむ)くない。
It's not cold today.

あれ、よくない？
That one's not good?

別(べつ)に好(す)きじゃない。
I don't particularly like it.

この部屋(へや)は静(しず)かじゃない。
This room isn't quiet.

全然(ぜんぜん)難(むずか)しくない。
It's not difficult at all.
