Comparing Two Things

のほうが compares two things: "X is more ~ than Y." Our lesson on adjectives covers the basics you'll need for comparisons.

The Pattern

X のほうが Y より adjective

• ラーメンのほうがうどんよりおいしいです。
  Ramen is more delicious than udon.

• スキーのほうがスノーボードより楽(たの)しい。
  Skiing is more fun than snowboarding.

Asking for Comparisons

X と Y と どっちのほうが adjective ですか。

• ラーメンとうどんとどっちのほうが安(やす)い？
  Which is cheaper, ramen or udon?

Answer: ラーメンのほうが安(やす)い。 (Ramen is cheaper.)

Giving Advice with ほうがいい

ほうがいい means "you should " or " would be better."

Affirmative Advice: た-form + ほうがいい

Use the past plain form (た-form) before ほうがいい:

• もっと水(みず)を**飲(の)んだ**ほうがいいです。
  You should drink more water.

Negative Advice: ない-form + ほうがいい

Use the present plain negative:

• 毎日(まいにち)お酒(さけ)を**飲(の)まない**ほうがいいです。
  You shouldn't drink every day.
