Changing the Subject on Purpose
ところで signals that you are leaving the current topic and starting a different one.
- ところで、週末の予定は決まりましたか。(By the way, have you decided your weekend plans?)
The new topic must be genuinely unrelated. If it follows on from what was said, you want それで or では instead.
Not ところが
The pair is one character apart and shares nothing:
| Pattern | Job |
|---|---|
| ところで | by the way — new topic |
| ところが | however — unexpected result |
Position
ところで opens the sentence, usually followed by a comma. It cannot sit mid-sentence, and it is not attached to the previous clause.
Register and Function
Neutral politeness — usable with a colleague or a stranger. Its real job is social: it warns the listener that a shift is coming, which is softer than simply launching into a new subject. In business email it often introduces the actual purpose of the message after an opening pleasantry.
Distinguish たところで
たところで is a completely different pattern meaning "even if, pointlessly". It attaches to a た form; ところで stands alone.
