Adjective Polite Past | ～かったです / ～でした

Polite Past Adjectives

Saying "it was tall" or "it was quiet" in polite Japanese. Our lesson on adjectives covers this alongside all four polite forms.

い-Adjectives

Drop the final い and add かったです:

いい becomes よかったです. Not いかったです.

A common mistake: adding でした to い-adjectives. 高(たか)いでした is wrong. The い itself conjugates.

な-Adjectives

Replace です with でした:

昨日(きのう)は暑(あつ)かったです。
It was hot yesterday.

旅行(りょこう)は楽(たの)しかったです。
The trip was fun.

テストはよかったです。
The test went well.

あのレストランは有名(ゆうめい)でした。
That restaurant was famous.

子供(こども)の時(とき)、サッカーが好(す)きでした。
When I was a child, I liked soccer.

京都(きょうと)はきれいでした。
Kyoto was beautiful.
