Making Adjectives Negative (Polite)

Saying "not tall" or "not quiet" in polite Japanese. The pattern depends on い-adjectives vs な-adjectives. Our adjective conjugation guide covers all four polite forms in one place.

い-Adjectives

Drop the final い and add くないです:

Remember いい: the negative is よくないです (from the よい stem), not いくないです.

An alternative polite negative for い-adjectives is くありません: 高(たか)くありません. This sounds slightly more formal.

な-Adjectives

Add じゃありません after the adjective stem:

A more formal alternative: ではありません. 好(す)きではありません sounds slightly stiffer than じゃありません.

Example Sentences

今日(きょう)は暑(あつ)くないです。
It's not hot today.

この映画(えいが)は面白(おもしろ)くないです。
This movie is not interesting.

納豆(なっとう)は好(す)きじゃありません。
I don't like natto.

あまりよくないです。
It's not very good.

ここは静(しず)かじゃありません。
It's not quiet here.

日本語(にほんご)は難(むずか)しくないです。
